« Piñata » – 2007

After the critically acclaimed debut album « Mejico, Maxico », The Mexican Institute of Sound is set to release a new musical adventure called « Piñata ».

Camilo Lara leads and supports this one-man institution. His second record is a wild clash of musical landscapes. From Cumbia, Cha Cha Cha and Danzon, to Baile Funk, Hip Hop, Electro and cut & paste beats.

« Piñata » features several guest artists, some of them known outside the latin world such as Chris Frantz (Talking Heads, Tom Tom Club), Fantastic Plastic Machine from Japan, Argentinean superstars Babasonicos (Ian Brown protégés), Brazilian-German singer Pat-C and Mexican legendary band Café Tacuba.

Recorded in Mexico in Lara’s own home studio and produced by German artist Holger Beier (half of Bungalow’s Le Hammond Inferno), « Piñata » explores the other side of Mexico City. Songs like « La Kebradita » or « Hip Hop No Pares » are the perfect soundtrack for the biggest and most polluted city in the world.

Natural as velcro and synthetic as leather, MIS is a good example of how borders exists only in maps. It’s very difficult to classify and categorize the music of the Mexican Institute of Sound, after all how can one truly interpret the feeling and emotion of such a conceptual sound? Rich with electronica influences, beats, synthesizers, playful atmospheres that evolve with the song, his music is clearly a union of the past of Mexico’s diverse cultural life with what the future of cosmopolitan Mexican music may become.
